Yorkshire Insider's '42 under 42' event, where Katie Mallinson of Scriba PR was awarded recognition

A pleasure to be a ’42 under 42’

I had the privilege of attending a small dinner at the Royal Armouries in Leeds recently, to celebrate ‘42 under 42’.

The ‘class of 2017’ was compiled by renowned media brand Yorkshire Insider, to celebrate 42 business owners from the region who have achieved something interesting or impressive, before their 42nd birthday.

Sitting among these people alone would have been a great way to spend the evening. But the privilege was all the greater, because I was one of the 42 people on the list!

Insider announced the line up in their magazine earlier this year, before the ‘class’ met with the editorial team, previous ’42 under 42’ alumni and other special guests, last week.

It was a relaxed but exciting get-together (admittedly, I did have to Google the dress code – ‘lounge suit’). This year’s ‘42’ were congratulated before a three course meal where plenty of wine flowed. Richard Carter, Chief Executive of fintech giant Nostrum Group then got to the stage for a ‘hot seat’ interview with Insider editor Ian Leech. He offered an honest and inspiring insight into his journey to date, before elaborating on some of the challenges and pinnacle points of his career.

Much of the discussion centred naturally on the world of tech, which was music to my ears of course. We heard the staggering extent to which technology has revolutionised the finance and banking industry, but as I looked around the room at the businessowners there, it was clear that technology is making phenomenal waves throughout virtually all walks of commercial life.

The event concluded with a special award for Matt Turner, Chief Executive of Tastecard and one of this year’s ‘42 under 42’. He was praised for his restaurant discounts venture and the achievements he has racked up in a relatively short space of time. To be on a list with a renowned Yorkshire businessman like that was a very proud moment indeed.

It just goes to show that success can be defined in many different ways. And what a lot of it there is in Yorkshire alone!
