Creating a blog may be something that you’ve always wanted to have a go at, but you’ve simply never known where to start!
Below are six tips explaining the basics of writing one, and how to choose the perfect platform to use…
Why write a blog?
Are you a fitness fanatic? A baking expert? A fashion guru? Or a business looking to attract new clients? It may be that you want to share your recipes, workouts, latest clothing sketches, or bolster your reputation – either way, a blog is an ideal platform to enable you to do this. You may also be someone who also just loves writing and being creative, so this is a great way to put those skills to great use.
A successful blog should aim to produce at least two different pieces of writing per month, to ensure your content stays fresh. Choosing a topic that interests you is key – if you select a subject that doesn’t fascinate you, you’re bound to lose momentum and your posts will not be engaging to readers.
What is the best site to use?
Two of the main blogging platforms are WordPress and Blogger. In terms of size, WordPress is bigger, and has captured 25% of the market; however this does not necessarily mean it is the better site. Again, this is down to personal preference – take a look at both options and do your research, to help you determine which one would be best for you.
Understand your audience
Now you have established the reason for creating your blog and decided which platform is best for you, you can begin to think about starting to write. Understanding your audience is the first factor to consider before producing anything. Your target readership will determine the tone and formality of your blog, so this is one of the most important things to get right.
Your title is the first thing people will set eyes on, so make it interesting! It needs to clearly outline what the rest of your blog will explore. Try to make it as engaging as possible, to entice people to read the rest of your commentary.
Don’t give everything away all at once
A good way to attract people to read your next blog, is to not give everything away in one go. See if you can even create two pieces of content from one topic, by keeping some information back, which could become the basis of your next piece. You can even refer back to a previous blog, and add in some links, to achieve more coverage for older work.
Organise your content
The final thing to do before posting your blog for the rest of the world to see, is to check the order of your content. You want to have the most important part at the top, to instantly engage people, and make them want to read on. Likewise, the remainder of your online journal should be spaced out in sections accordingly, to make sure you don’t overwhelm the reader with too much information clumped together.
These are just a few basic tips to help get you started on your blogging journey! It may be a good idea, once your work becomes established, to share its content on your social platforms to further draw people in.
Now, you have no excuse to put off creating your blog, so don’t delay – get writing, be creative and most of all, have fun!
